Having some problems with a pair of PV-143 DVR cards

I just bought two PV-143 DVR cards. I've connected a camera with the model number DVCCMD803N to one of the cards to test. (I can't find a brand name on the box or in the manual) I open Cheese to test the camera. At first I could see the image flawlessly, but as of yesterday it started having problems. When it does work, it gives me some really weird distortion (see attached picture). When it doesn't work, the program will freeze and my speakers will emit a loud beep. When this happens, I am not able to launch Cheese again until I reboot the whole machine.

Xawtv doesn't work at all:

dvr@dvr:~$ xawtv -c /dev/video0

This is xawtv-3.95.dfsg.1, running on Linux/x86_64 (2.6.32-5-amd64)

If I try to launch xawtv without any options or arguments, the program will launch but I get no picture.

I ultimately want to make Zoneminder work with these cards, but I imagine I would at least have to get xawtv to work before I'm able to make Zoneminder work. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing these problems?
